Ambrolauri

Ambrolauri is a small town in Racha. It is famous for its red wine Khvantchkara. In the center of this small town, you will find the statue of a Khvantchkara bottle. Historical monuments of Ambrolauri include Nikortsminda Catherdral, Barakoni church of mother of god(built-in 1753), Minda and Khotevis Tsikhe.

Shaori and Nikortsminda

Shaori lake is located in the lower Racha, Ambrolauri municipality. It is the largest lake in the region. It is always cool in summer, and snowy and frozen in winter. The lake reflects colorful leaves in every season and trees covered with snow in winter.  In every part of the year visitors can enjoy a double view of nature.

After 10 minutes ride from Shaori lake, you will reach Nikortsminda Cathedral. Nikortsminda Cathedral was built in 1010-1014. It is a symbol of Georgian architecture in the Golden age. Nowadays, Nikortsminda is a UNESCO World Heritage Site candidate.

Oni

Oni has located 30 km from Ambrolauri. It is the municipal center of Racha. According to people, it was founded in the 2nd century BCE. You can see Oni’s Local Museum built-in 1937. Moreover, the small village Gona surrounded by Caucasus mountains covered in snow. It is located 1680 meters from the sea level. And Shovi resort, which is a mountain climatic and health resort. Best known for its carbonated water.

Furthermore, you can visit Tskhrajvari located 60 km from Oni.  You will have amazing views of Racha from Tskhrajvari. Legends say that, from one family, 9 sons went to war. Their father was always praying for them. He decided to tribute something and decided to build a cross on the mountains of Tkibuli. He took all 9 crosses with his hands on the top of the mountain and built the house of prayer there. After this fact, all his 9 sons came back home healthy. And this house of prayers nowadays has a lot of visitors.
